Badugi Poker
Badugi poker has grown increasingly popular during the last few years, especially in Europe and North America where it used to be more or less unknown. The huge interest in online poker has paved the way for more unusual poker variants, such as the Asian Badugi. By playing online, it is easier to find fellow players even if they are located in another part of the world. Today, Badugi is also played offline even outside Asia, but the game is still much bigger online.
You can choose among several forms of Badugi poker, including limit games, pot limit games and half pot limit games. Badugi is a four card poker game with triple draws, and unlike most other forms of poker it is the lowest hand that will win the game. The best possible hand in Badugi is a hand that consists of 1-2-3-4 from different suits. Having cards from the same suit or of the same value is not desirable in Badugi. Low cards are better than high cards, and since the ace counts as 1, it is the 1-2-3-4 hand that is most desirable value wise. A hand that consists of cards from four different suits, and where no cards are of the same value, is called a Badugi. 1-2-3-4 from different suits is a Badugi, but so is T-J-Q-K of different suits.
A Badugi poker game starts when the dealer deal each Badugi player four cards. The cards are dealt one card at a time in a clockwise direction around the poker table. It is always the player on the small blind that receives the first card in Badugi. When each player have received four cards, the player located left of the big blind will start the betting round. Each player can fold, call or raise. A game of Badugi will always proceed clockwise. The allowed bets will differ depending on if you play pot game poker, half pot game poker or limit game poker.
The player sitting on the dealer's left side will start the first draw round in Badugi, and the game will then continue clockwise. During the initial draw round, a player can discard and draw between one and four cards, or refrain from exchanging any cards at all. If you choose not to change any cards, it is referred to as “Standing Pat”.
When the first drawing round is over, the second bet round will start and the bet increment will be based on the low stakes in Badugi poker. After this, it is time for a second draw round that follows exactly the same rules as the first draw round. You can choose to replace one to four cards, or Standing Pat in Badugi. After the second draw round, it is naturally time for a third betting round. This bet round is not exactly like the previous bet round, since it will use the high stake to decide betting increment. In Badugi, the third betting round will be followed by a third draw round, and during this draw round the dealer might be forced to reshuffle previously discarded cards if the deck has been exhausted. After this round, it is time for the last bet round and now the high stake is used. Badugi will end in a showdown if more than one player is left
