Dealer's choice
As the name suggests, dealer's choice means that the dealer decides which poker game that will be played. Dealer's choice has grown very popular in home games as well as in casinos since it makes it possible for the players to explore a wide range of different poker variants during an evening. The dealer position is typically rotated around the poker table so that each player is given the opportunity to choose a game. In casinos, it is naturally the professional dealer that does the actually dealing during the entire evening, but the possibility to choose game is rotated. The dealer can sometimes not only choose the poker variant, but also affect specific rules regarding the game, e.g. if wild cards will be used or not. The selection of available poker games and variants is usually limited in casinos, since it is important that players as well as the dealer know the rules for each game.
“Dealer's choice” is also the name of a book written by James Ernest, Phil Foglio and Mike Selinker. In this book, you can find information about more than 200 different poker variants and it can therefore serve as inspiration for an evening of dealer's choice.
There exists a vast array of different poker variants, but as mentioned above the selection is typically limited when you play dealer's choice in casinos. A majority of all poker variants have been invented in the United States during the 19th and 20th century, but you can find poker variants that hails from other parts of the world as well, e.g. the Asian Badugi poker. Generally speaking, most poker games belong to one of these three groups.
1. Draw poker
In a game of draw poker, each player will be dealt a complete hand to begin with. This hand should be kept hidden from the other players. During the course of the game, the player can improve his or her hand by discarding cards and having them replaced by new cards from the deck. One of the most well-known forms of draw poker is “Five-card draw”.
2. Stud poker
In a game of stud poker, each player will be dealt a mix of face-down and face-up cards. The cards are dealt during the course of several betting rounds. Two of the most popular forms of stud poker are “Five-card stud” and “Seven-card stud”.
3. Community card poker
In a game of community card poker, the dealer will place face-up community cards on the table. Each player will also receive an incomplete hand that should be kept hidden from the other players. Each player can then construct a poker hand by combining his or her individual cards with the community cards. Two examples of highly popular community card poker variants are Texas hold 'em and Omaha hold 'em.
