Draw Poker
Draw poker is the original form of poker and all the other poker variants can be traced back to this poker type. During a game of draw poker, each player is dealt a complete hand before any betting commence. Cards can then be exchanged during later rounds.
Draw poker is today rare in casinos and larger poker competitions, but is still very popular in home games and is often the first poker variant that new poker players learn. When played by experienced poker player it tends to become a bit monotonous, but you can vary the game endlessly by altering the traditional draw poker variant somewhat and play some of the newer forms of draw poker. You can for instance introduce wild cards, play with more or fewer cards than five, change the hand values, play lowball poker variants, or adjust the betting rounds. Due to this myriad of different draw poker rules, it is a good idea to make sure that all players agree about the rules before you start playing a game of draw poker.
Common examples of altered forms of draw poker that has turned into new poker variants are Anaconda (Pass the trash), Badougi, California high/low split, California lowball, Double-draw and Triple-draw, Four-before, Gardena jackpots (Jacks to open or Jackpots), High/low poker with declare, Johnson (Jacks back), Kansas City (Billy Baxter), Q-Ball, Shotgun (Roll 'em out or Skinny Minnie) and Spit in the ocean.
When draw poker is played at home or under other informal circumstances, it is popular to use an ante. An ante is a mandatory bet. Each player must place an amount of money that equals the ante in the pot before any dealing starts. When an ante is used, the betting round will typically start with the player sitting left of the dealer.
When draw poker is played in casinos, it is more common to use blinds. A blind is also a form of forced bet, but when blinds are used it is popular to use two blinds for each round. The player sitting after the dealer will place a blind that typically equals 50 percent of a minimal bet (small blind), while the next player must place a blind equal to a minimal bet (big blind). You can however use only one blind, or up to three blinds. When blinds are used in draw poker, the betting round will typically start with the player situated left of the big blind.
When playing a traditional game of draw poker, each player will be dealt five cards face down. The player can look at all five cards, but will of course keep them secret from the other players. When everyone has looked at their cards, the first betting round will commence. If an ante is used, the player sitting left of the dealer will start the betting. The next player can then match the bet (calling), raise the bet, or fold the cards and exit from the game. This procedure is then continued around the table. As long a no player has placed a bet, it is possible to pass, which means that the player will stay in the game without betting anything. As soon as a bet has been placed by a player, the following players are however not allowed to pass. They must bet, raise or fold. The draw part of traditional draw poker occurs after each betting round. You can discard up to three cards and receive an equal amount of new cards from the dealer.
