Lowball Poker
Lowball is a type of poker where the player with the lowest hand value wins the pot. The lowball structure can be used in many different traditional poker variants, but is most commonly occurring in five-card draw poker variants. Lowball poker is also known as “low poker”. There exists several different lowball methods, of which the most common ones are “Ace-to-five low”, “Ace-to-six low”, “Deuce-to-seven low” and “Deuce-to-six low”.
If you play a game of Ace-to-five low, the lowest possible hand will be A-2-3-4-5. This hand is known as ‘the wheel' or ‘bicycle'. The ace is counted as 1, and straights and flushes are not considered more or less valuable than any other combination of cards. If you instead decide to play Ace-to-six low, the lowest possible hand will be A-2-3-4-6. This type of lowball poker is also known as 6-4 low. Flushes and straights will be considered high hands, and aces are always counted as 1.
In a game of Deuce-to-seven low, the lowest hand is 2-3-4-5-7. Straights and flushes are considered high hands, and the ace is ranked above the king. Since the ace never counts as 1 in a game of Deuce-to-seven low, an A-2-3-4-5 hand will not be considered a straight. A-2-3-4-5 is just an ace-high no pair hand. Deuce-to-six low is not a very widespread form of lowball poker. It is also known as 6-5 low. Straights and flushes are not considered more or less valuable than any other combination of cards, and the ace will never rank as 1.
A game of lowball poker can also require the lowest possible hand, e.g. A-2-3-4-5, to contain cards from at least two different suits. The suits can also be used to break a tie in a low-ball poker game. Spades are ranked highest, followed by hearts, diamonds and finally clubs. Straights and flushes are however never used to break a tie. If the tie can not be broken using suits, the players with the lowest hands will split the pot between them.
One example of a lowball game
One commonly played form of lowball poker is a five-card draw poker game that uses small blinds and big blinds. The big blind is equal to the minimum bet, while the small blind is 50 percent of the minimum bet. Players must call the big blind; otherwise they are no longer a part of the game. The dealer will deal each player five cards face down. A player can then choose to discard between 1 and 4 cards and have them replaced by new cards before the betting. The player can also decide to keep all his cards and make no exchange. You can discard the fifth card as well, but you will not receive a replacement card until all the other players have received their cards. The dealer must also burn one card before handing out any new “5th cards”. In some lowball games, a player can only receive a new 5th card if he or she has an ace.
