Omaha hi/lo
Omaha is a community card poker variant that is popular in casinos all over the world. In North America, the term “Omaha” usually refers to the high-low split type of Omaha, a form of Omaha that is known as Omaha hi/lo in the rest of the world. The original form of Omaha, where the pot is not split between the highest and the lowest hand, is called Omaha High Only.
In North American casinos, Omaha hi/lo is usually played with fixed limits. The traditional form of Omaha High Only that is more common in Europe will typically be a pot limit game (PLO). Pot limit and even no-limit forms of Omaha hi/lo are rare in casinos, but you can find them when you visit online casinos.
In a hi/lo (high/low) split game, the pot will be split between the player with the highest five-card hand and the player with the lowest five-card hand. Since each player will construct one high five-card hand and one low five-card hand in Omaha hi/lo, both halves of the pot can go to the same player. Each individual player can use any two of the four hole cards when creating the high hand, and then use any two of the four hole cards to form the low hand. Just as in traditional Omaha, you must always use exactly two individual cards and three community cards to form your poker hand.
In Omaha hi/lo, you will typically need eight-high or lower to get a qualified low hand. A 4-5-6-7-8 will then be the highest possible low hand. When eight-high or lower is required, Omaha hi/lo is often called Omaha eight-or-better or Omaha 8. Some casinos do however require only nine-high or lower - Omaha hi/lo 9.
Another way of varying Omaha hi/lo is to deal five cards to each poker player instead of the traditional four cards. The same rule as explained above will still be valid in five card Omaha hi/lo and you will use two cards from your own hand to form a poker hand together with exactly three community cards.
A popular European game called Courcheval is similar to Omaha hi/lo, but unlike Omaha hi/lo, the Courcheval dealer will place one community card face up on the table before any betting takes place. In traditional Omaha hi/lo, the first betting round will start when the players still only know about their own four cards. Three community cards are then placed face up on the table before the second betting round. In Courcheval, community card two and three are dealt after the first betting round, and the game will then continue according to the traditional Omaha rules.
