Amateur Poker League
Like every other poker player who takes the game even half seriously, one of my dreams is to someday win a World Series of Poker bracelet.
Unfortunately, I must admit to all my readers, that tournament poker is not my strong suit. I am a great cash game player, yet I have not been able to master tournament poker.
As most of our advanced Poker Player Lifers know, tournaments and cash games are two entirely different animals. They have two entirely different strategies.
Well we all know that the World Series of Poker is all about tournament play. So what are my options? Do I blow away a bunch of buy-ins on tournaments and learn through the "School of Hard Knocks"? Well frankly loyal readers, I have much better things to do with my money than to be the "Bubble Boy" of the tournament circuit.
That's when a friend of mine told me about the Amateur Poker League. The Amateur Poker League hosts FREE Texas Holdem Tournaments at your favorite locations throughout the country. And what's great about it is that there is no buy-in.
Basically you play at your favorite bar every week that is hosting the events. Depending on where you place, you earn a certain amount of points. If you place high enough at your locale, you are invited to play in a regional tournament. Do well there, and you move on to the National tournament.
This year the Amateur Poker League is going to send one player, who can make it through all the stages, to the 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event and pay for their buy-in.
Now at first I was a bit skeptical. Did I really want to waste my time playing in tournaments where no money was involved? How good could the competition really be?
After playing my first week, all my questions were answered. These guys aren't there to lay down. They all play as if a millon dollars were on the line. And along the way I have met some great new poker buddies who have invited me to their home games where I have been able to make some money!
I'm now into my fourth week and my tournament skills are definitely improving. I still have alot to learn but I figure the 2099 WSOP is far enough away so that when it comes around, I'll be ready. And it wouldn't have cost me a cent.
