Basic Rules of Holdem
Someone once said about
Texas Hold'em,
"it takes a few minutes to learn but a lifetime to master" . Truer words could not be spoken.
But as with all things, you must learn to crawl before you walk, so this section is about learning the basic rules of Texas Hold'em. You must first build a foundation before you set your sites on building an empire.
In
Hold'em everyone is dealt two cards face down, and a round of betting takes place. In the first round you have the option of either calling or raising the blind bet, or you must fold your hand.
When the first round of betting is complete, three community cards, called the flop are turned up in the center of the table and another round of betting begins. From this point on, you may check if no one has bet when the action comes around to you, or you may decide to call or raise if you like your hand. If there is a bet before it is your turn, your options are to fold, call, raise or re-reraise depending on your hand.
At this point another community card, called the turn is then placed in the center of the table with another round of betting ensuing. The fifth and final card, called the river , where dreams are made and broken, (when you've been playing for awhile you'll know exactly what I mean) is placed in the center of the table followed by the last round of betting. The best five card hand, using any combination of your two private cards and the five community cards wins the pot.
Sounds easy enough right? That way of thinking is what keeps professional poker players living in the lap of luxury.
These are just the basics. In order to become a winning poker player, it is going to take some work. Fortunately for you, we are living in the age of information. More books about poker strategy are available now than at any other time.
With that said, book knowledge is great, but it will never replace real life experience. With the advent of internet poker, we are now able to trim the learning curve by years without spending a dime. That's the great thing about online poker. You can play on a pokersite for free and play against real players in real life situations. You can practice everything you've learned in the books for free. And when you're ready to tackle the "real money" you'll be more than ready to claim your piece of the prize.
