Betting Options in Poker
There are five actions that you can take when it is your turn. They are as follows:
Check: This is when you choose not to bet, but stay in contention for the pot because no other player has yet to bet on the round.
Bet: To make a wager by putting chips into the pot.
Call: This is when you post an amount equal to the bet of another player. In other words, you match his bet.
Raise: To make a bet, increasing the size of the previous bet on that particular betting round.
Fold: You look down at your hand and you've got nothing worth playing. Toss the cards away. You just folded.
Blinds and Antes
One other thing we should probably discuss in this area is the use of "forced bets", known as blinds and antes.
Blind Bets: In order to stimulate action at the beginning of the hand, the first two players to the left of the dealer button are required to post blind bets. There is a big blind and a small blind, with the big being one full bet and the small being half of the full bet. For example, if you are playing a a game of $1/$2 Texas Hold'em, then the big blind would need to contribute $1, while the small blind would contribute $0.50.
The most popular poker games, such as Texas Hold'em and Omaha both use this type of structure, so this is what you will likely see more often than not.
Antes: An ante is a token amount of money that is contributed to the pot by each player at the table. The amount will vary depending what game you are playing. Antes are used in games such as Stud and Razz.
On a side note, antes are also used in hold'em tournaments in addition to the blind bets when the the "forced bets" get to a certain limit.
