Poker in New Orleans
Louisiana has a few different sections of casino boats, but the only land based non Indian casino is Harrahs. I didn't venture outside of New Orleans so I can't cover the rest of the state. I did see a Ballys River Boat in New Orleans though, but after being in this Harrahs there was no reason to care about any other casinos.
What a casino. It's massive. They fit full size Mardi Gras floats in the casino. When I went to New Orleans during Mardi Gras I had to stop at Harrahs and try out the poker. Granted, I was drunk and horny, never a good combination for poker players. The funny thing is, on the outside the casino looks like a dump. I'm guessing because it's in the heart of the city, right off of Canal Street, they just want it to blend in. I swear, you'll walk in and think it's gonna be a dive. It's not.
HARRAHS CASINO POKER REVIEW: This place is off the hook. I love it. If I could put up with the thick accents and decaying city I'd move to New Orleans. I say those comments with the utmost respect for the city. I love it. It truly is the only Northern Style city in the south. It's great. The food is amazing. But the casino is unbelievable. And your only 2 hours from Biloxi and its 12+ casinos. This is a win win situation. Gamble, drink, party.
This casino was featured on TV for the The World Series of Poker Circuit event. The casino is dark and has all types of lights in the sky, and when they do the Mardi Gras float parade you'll want to lift your shirt and show your male breasts. Ok, let's not get out of hand now.
The only thing I didn't like is that the parking garage is across the street and you enter the casino underground. This casino got put on the map when Jamie Foxx was arrested for being disordely when he refused to be carded at the entrance. Let me tell you, they card anyone. You can look 60 and they'll card you. New Orleans loves its law, they arrest kids for gambling. Real nice. Give the kids a break, arrest the cocaine dealers instead.
Anyway, enough negativity. This poker room is famous. The Taj Majal is famous for being in Rounders, so hit there when you go to Atlantic City. But if you're in the South you've got to be crazy if you don't check Harrahs New Orleans out. They come from all over the world to play here. Why? Because the tables are set by TRUE MARDI GRAS FLOATS. There are jesters in the room, French Quarter Style Balconies, and awesome black lighting with stars in the skies. This place is bringing New Orleans gambling back on the map and it marks a strong return for poker in the town.
I learned that poker had been a big game in the Bayou country since the 1800's which is awesome, even if it was brought there by the French.
The Poker room is comfortable, beautiful, and modern. There's Pot-Limit Omaha, No Limit Texas Hold Em, and you actually get your own pager so you can roam the casino floor while waiting for a seat. It gets crowded. If you have to visit 3 poker places in your life time, 1 is the Taj Majal in Atlantic City, 2 is the HorseShoe in Las Vegas, and the 3rd is Harrahs New Orleans. I'm telling you, this casino is amazing. I love it. So what if the city is a bit grimey? Just stay in the casino and hit on those hot southern waitresses. You'll get lost in this casino, it's huge.
The other awesome thing about all Harrahs properties is that you can use your Harrahs Players Card and it links to all their casinos. So you can play in Atlantic City or New Orleans and earn comped rooms in Vegas or Tunica.
Oh I forgot, there's also a Harrahs Thouroughbread Race Track with slots in Louisiana. I only know that because I have a little bit of a gambling problem with the horses as well. Why limit my vice to just poker? If I'm gonna be a degenerate, let's throw horses, slots, and blacjack into the mix.
Anyway, go to Harrahs New Orleans, watch the hot waitresses bring you your drinks, and drink away. New Orleans was built on drinking, so indulge yourself. Play the poker tables, you'll be in awe of this place. Make sure you go here. No, I demand you go here. Suck on some crawfish and win enough to hit Biloxi after you're done.
I always liked the Mardi Gras theme. The ShowBoat in Atlantic City has made itself a nice profit with the theme in Jersey. Use your comp dollars from New Orleans to get your free trip to Atlantic City.
Ok, that's enough with this article. Now I'm in the mood to go listen to some Dr. John and buy some gumbo. Man, I love that Gumbo. HARRAHS NEW ORLEANS CASINO REVIEW - 5 STARS
