Loose-Passive Poker Table
Generally, tables fall into the same categories as the players at the table do. A table can be loose or tight, passive or aggressive. The difference between classifying players and tables is that a table is made up of many different players, so you could have loose and tight at the same table; or you could have passive and aggressive at the same table.
They key to success is realizing which types of players are at the table and where they are seated(position) relative to yourself and the other players at the table. Finally, you will need to learn to adapt your play, which is covered in another article.
If you play low-limit Hold'em, which is where most beginners play, you should get used to playing at a loose-passive table. Players here tend to call all the time, but rarely raise. It is common for six or more players to call and see the flop. Once all of these players see the flop, it is likely that many of them are going to continue to chase with garbage draws. The problem is that so many people are calling and making the pot bigger, that the Pot Odds are making it worthwhile to call. All of a sudden, you've got many players going all the way to the river.
This type of game will be frustrating for a tight-aggressive player, which is usually the best way to play. A tight player only plays premium hands, and must therefore be patient and wait for those hands. Eventually these premium hands will happen, but when they do there's a good chance that someone at the table will catch a better hand on the river.
For example, you have Ace King before the flop and six other players call your raise. The flop comes down Ace, Ten, Four of different suits. Most players expect to win at this point, having the top pair with the highest kicker, but the pot is already so large, and the players are so loose that many people call to the river. The turn card is a six, and the river brings an eight. You bet, since there really isn't anything scary on the board, one player calls, one raises, and everyone else folds except for you and the other caller. The raiser turns over his hand, 10-4 suited, for two pairs.
These types of beats happen regularly at Loose-Passive tables. Try to avoid freaking out and yelling at the player who beat you with a weaker hand. This is the wrong attitude to have. First of all, you should expect to get chased out often in these types of games. Most importantly though, the weak players who beat you on the river are the weak players who pay you out time and time again when they don't catch their cards. Also, they will pay you out huge when they hit hands like two low pair when you have a better hand. Imagine the same scenario as before, only this time, the flop was Ace King Ten. Now when your opponent catches his lower two pair, you are laughing and he will pay you very generously.
Important Notes on Loose-Passive Games
1. Know what you're getting into. Be prepared to get beat by bad hands and weak players. If you get too upset when you get rivered, you should probably just change tables.
2. Play more drawing hands in late position. The pot will usually have many callers and will not be raised so suited connectors and suited aces become very valuable.
3. Avoid bluffing. The players at the table like to call, some will even call on the river with nothing just to see what the bettor is holding.
