Learn How Your Poker Opponents Play

A player can learn all the technical aspects and odds in poker and still come up short. In the end, poker is a people game, and every single poker game is different. Therefore, a different strategy is required to win in each different situation.

The key to winning is being able to adapt your style of play according to what your opponents are doing. Before you can do this, you should have a basic understand of the major classifications of players, and the general Types of Tables they create.

Basic Classification System

In general, there are four classifications for poker players. The easiest way to classify players is by how many hands they play, and the likelihood that they are betting or raising when they play. A loose player plays many hands, whereas a tight player folds mostly, only playing premium hands. An aggressive player is a bettor, while a passive player usually just calls. Here are the four main categories:

Loose-Passive:
These players just call every hand and rarely bet or raise. They are very weak but make sure never to try and bluff these players.

Loose-Aggressive:
A loose-aggressive player really shakes up the game. Some people hate them because they are always making it more expensive to play, but others love them because they make the pots much larger than they would be otherwise. The tricky thing about these players is that its hard to figure out what they have, so the best idea is to only play good hands against them. Also, dont be afraid to call them if you have a decent hand and they raise into a flush or a straight on the board, they may be bluffing. At the same time though, maniacs get good hands too, so dont be surprised if they actually have the hand.

Tight-Passive:
These players only play good cards, and they dont usually raise or bet unless they have a very strong hand. They are generally pretty predictable which is good, but they dont usually lose a whole lot of money.

Tight-Aggressive:
This is generally the style of most winning players. They usually only play good hands, and they play them aggressively. The underlying theory is that if youre playing good hands, youre probably in the lead so you should be betting or raising. Of course, these players know when its time to slow down, if the cards on the board look scary.

Being selective with the cards you play, and making your opponents pay when you get good hands is the best way to start winning at poker. Sometimes its frustrating to be this type of player because you will be playing very few hands, and every now and then your good hands will get beat on the river. The important thing is to stick to the strategy and not go on Tilt.
