Patience & Discipline

The most difficult part of poker isn't the technical aspect of the game, its the mental aspect.

After studying and playing countless hours of poker, many plays will become routine, but in order to win consistently, you have to be in control of yourself, and not let your emotions affect your play. There are two essential personality traits required to be a successful player, patience and discipline.

Patience

The most important attribute a player can have is patience. In order to win, you must be selective with the cards you play. A good poker player will win fewer hands than most bad poker players, simply because they are more patient.

Winning at poker isn't determined by how many pots a player won during a game, it is determined by the amount of money a player has when they leave the game. Therefore, you don't have to win every pot, you just have to make sure you win as much as possible when you have a good hand, and lose as little as possible when you don't. This means it is smart to fold dominated hands such as Ace Three offsuited, and wait for cards that are more likely to win.

Basically, a good player must be patient because a good player only plays good cards.

Bad poker players chase hands even when they know they are living on a prayer, just because they want to win a hand. Bad poker players will try and bluff at the wrong times just to try and win more pots. Bad poker players will play way more hands than they should, just because they don't have the patience to wait to win hands.

The lack of patience is often what distinguishes losers from winners, but not only bad players lose their patience. Even the best players make these same mistakes sometimes. The key, is to make these mistakes as rarely as possible, and try to remain disciplined.

Discipline

Discipline is another important characteristic. A good player can have all the patience in the world, but if that person isn't well disciplined, they will occasionally go on tilt. Tilt means to lose control and play stupidly for awhile. Usually players go on tilt after suffering a bad beat or having a cold run of cards. Ten minutes of Tilt play could cost a player so much money that those ten minutes alone turn a winning session into a losing one.

Players must stick to their strategy and play their best game at all times. If you feel yourself starting to play stupid, simply take a break. Get up, go for dinner, have a cigarette, or simply quit, if it's getting that bad. You'll cost yourself too much money if you're sitting at the table playing while you're upset, or bored, or frustrated or..........(you get the point)
