Stud Poker
Stud poker is a form of poker where each player will be dealt a mix of face-up and face-down cards. The cards are dealt over the course of several betting rounds. Most stud poker variants are non-positional poker games, since it is not automatically the same player who makes the first bet during all betting rounds. The first betting player can change from round to round, e.g. depending on who has the best face-up poker hand.
Many words and expressions from old stud poker terminology have today left the poker table and made their entrance into every day language. An example of such an expression is “having an ace in the hole”, which means having a beneficial secret or an extra asset. In stud poker, the cards that are dealt face-down to each player are called “hole cards”. Having an ace among your hidden cards can naturally prove a very valuable asset during a game of stud poker.
Stud poker can be played as five-card stud, six-card stud or seven-card stud. Five-card stud poker is the oldest variant and the first known instance of five-card stud games dates back to the American Civil War. Seven-card is however more popular in United States casinos. Especially the casinos in the western parts of the United States have a long tradition of arranging seven-card stud games, while the eastern casinos have been more found of Texas hold 'em. During the last decade, Texas hold 'em has grown to become the most popular poker game in casinos all over the country. Five-card stud poker is still popular in a few countries, including South Africa and Finland. In Finland, five-card stud poker is known as “Sökö”. In South Africa, five-card stud poker is played using a stripped deck. Six-card stud poker is a rare poker form played by a limited number of enthusiasts. The rules are very similar to those used for seven-card stud poker, but without the last face-up round. The dealer will therefore deal two cards face-down, three cards face-up and finally one card face-down in a game of six-card stud poker. Just as with five-card stud and seven-card stud, there exists many variations of the six-card stud, and it can for instance be played as one-four-one instead of two-three-one.
