Breaking up a Poker Table
Question
When I watch the World Series of Poker, you can see them pull people from one table to another as the number of players in the tournament is reduced. How they determine which player moves to which table?
Answer
In the home tournaments I play in which will usually have 35-40 players, we just try to keep all the tables with the same amount of players. That's around 7-8 players. When a table drops down to 5 we take a player from the table with the most players. The dealer will give everyone at the table a card face up and the high card moves to the new table. We haven't had any problems with it.
On-line tournaments use a "percentage" form to determine when and where you go. If you are a "holding" player (you wait until you get high cards), you will be moved to a similar table. They rate how many hands you see, how many you win, etc. and move you to a table based on those values. The more active you are, the more likely you won't be moved.
In real tournaments, they take the high stack and move them. It wouldn't make much sence to move the low stack, since they are already losing. It would be no benifit to them to make them "learn" another set of people.
