When does the kicker card in poker make a difference?

Answer

The kicker card comes into play when you have the same pair, 2 pair, 3 of a kind, etc. as someone else.

Example: Suppose you are holding an Ace-King, and you are up against someone holding an Ace-Queen, and the community cards are Ace-3-7-4-Jack. You would win because you both have a pair of Aces, but you have the best 5 cards.

Also, your kicker is something that you have to pay close attention too, not so much in FREEROLL because people will hold onto just about anything there. If there is a higher card on the table your kicker might be useless at that point.

The best you can hope for with a kicker is hitting it to make two pair. Other then that they are kind of pointless, in my view. I don't play unless my kicker is 8 or higher (and I'm holding onto a face card). This gives me a chance at hitting it for a second pair, or possibly hitting a straight (depending on my other card).

Playing the odds and knowing your outs will keep you out of trouble, along with watching the bets. Good luck and keep playing.
