Live Poker Tournament Rules
Question
I was playing in a no limit tournament, and the fifth player, also posted BB was not paying attention. He won the previous pot and was stacking chips. When the bet got to him he said "I fold". When he realized it was free to check he checked and went on to win the pot. Should have this been allowed to stand?
Answer
A basic rule of holdem is that an oral statement denotes a player's action and is binding. As soon as he said "I fold," his hand is folded regardless of whether or not he already had chips in the pot.
If you say you fold...then you fold......
The other night a similar thing happened
It was two players in till the river...
one was all in..
There was a pair of queens on the board...and a king...and other cards that didn't play a role in the hand
The all in guy flipped his king and said he had two pair..asked if the other guy had two pair....he said no but flipped both his cards...he had paired up kings and the queens on the board gave him two pair but he had the better kicker......
How should this have been handled?
The all in guy said that he won because the other guy didn't say he had two pair..but he didn't call his hand either..
In this situation, the cards speak for themselves. Unless he folded, he won the hand regardless of what he thought he had in his hand. Once the cards were flipped and he realized he had a pair of kings, that overrides him saying that he didn't have a pair.
