When to Play Weak Poker Hands
Question
My question is this - if I have a K 8 offsuit in my hand - would you throw in before seeing the flop or would you bet the blind to see what comes up? To further the question... if you suggest hanging in to see the flop with the blind bet... would you stay in if someone would raise before the flop?
Answer
If the bet is enough so that you will not be risking to much to see it (ex. you hold 12,000 and the blind is only 100) then take a look, and go from there. Your position on the table is also something to consider, along with who else is in, how they have played (what they have played), and the odds that your kicker is enough to pull you through should your K fall. Most of the time an 8 will not get you very far in a high stakes game. The most you can hope for is two pair with K8, which is hard to get. In short, throw it away, unless your risk is such that you can see it without causing too much damage to your stack. You might get lucky.
In addition, a general rule is to play suited as you would un-suited (starting out). If you wouldn't play J5 unsuited, then don't play it suited. You'll lose more then you gain.
