Question

What are some of the must have poker books for a fairly new poker player?

Answer

Some of the "best" books probably are meant for more experienced players. Depending on how new you are to the game, the cheapest route to go is to visit your local library and check out a couple of them. Or, if you are interested in reading books by the pro's, you can visit any of their web sites. I know Phil Helmuth has written one that is supposed to be very good. But I'm not quite sure who his target audience is.

You can also get the lastest books from any book store, and you don't even have to pay for them. If you enjoy the peace and quite of a bookstore you can actually pick one out, sit down, and read it. But bring a notebook with you to jot down anything you find usefull.

You can spend some money at on-line sites, like Amazon.com. There are some hidden treasures there, and you can buy from other people who are trying to get rid of theirs for less then the original cost.

The Phil Hellmuth book is pretty good, but he talks about varous types of poker and only spends a small portion on no-limit texas holdem.

The thing I found is that most of the beginner books focus on limit texas holdem. And, most people that have become interested in the game want to learn about no-limit.

The best thing to do is to start with a beginner book even if it does focus on limit. Most of the strategy is the same and a beginner player won't be able to make the distinction in strategy anyway.

Once you start understanding basic strategy, I would recommend David Sklansky's "Tournament Poker for Advanced Players." I thought it was a really good book and it helps you understand the differences between limit and no-limit.
