Question

Ive never played at a casino.... Im a bit unsure what rake actually is, but in a real casino do they rake tables? Or do they rank winnings?

 

Answer

A rake is the amount of money the house takes from the pot. Each casino does it differently and I think some actually charge you by the length of time you sit at the table rather than by taking a rake. here are some examples from partypoker.com:

$0.50/$1.00 limit game
Pot size minimum $5
house rake is $0.50

$1/$2 limit game
pot size $12/$20
house rake is $0.75/$1.00

The higher the limit of the game, the less percentage the house takes.

Rakes vary depending on the stakes, and the casino.

In Tournaments, the house does not rake.

At Foxwoods in Connecticut, they take $5 every 30 minutes from every player. That's a pretty high rake.

Other places take 1-2% of the pot, or $4-5 per pot depending, again, on the stakes. Basically the casino can set their rakes to whatever they want- or even waive them for a period of time in the right atmosphere.

The reasoning behind the rake is that you're not playing against the house; you're playing against other players- so the casino is only providing the table, dealer, and drinks. So the rake is their way of providing some kind of profit off their poker room, to warrant keeping it open. Mohegan Sun (also in Connecticut) doesn't even have a poker room; they didn't have enough interest and about a year ago, they replaced the tables with slot machines.
