Poker Strategy According to Stakes
Question
What is the average money game you play in?
For the most part i play $5 buy in tournaments with like 5 friends....we are all young and no steady income as of yet,
but the online strategies i have read...and some strategies ive heard friends tell me from books they've read.......only play a small role in the strategy of a low stakes game.
Iive lost with AK too many times with a good size raise preflop to get called by someone holding a 68 unsuited or something,
but i feel at low stakes games....you should make your own strategy......The books you read from pros are for playing against pros....
Answer
The stakes definitely play a part in it, but I think the fact that so many people have started playing is the biggest problem. I think the strategy that is written in the books is still what you should go by, but at the same time you must be aware of your competition. Making a nice raise preflop with AK is the correct bet, but just be cautious when you are called by a player that isn't very knowledgable.
If the flop looks like it should have missed everyone, it may have hit your opponent perfectly. I think the best thing to do when playing with opponents that call with 68 is to only play the best hands and bet big when you hit. Usually, they are too clueless to know they should get out of the hand.
Win big on good hands, and lose little on marginal hands. Try not to get frustrated if you loose with AK to 68. Be happy your opponents aren't very good and win more than you lost the next time you are up against them. It definitely takes more concentration to beat bad players, but in the end, smart play will generally win.
It gets even more frustating when you play no-limit because one bad call can knock you out of a tournament. If you are going to change your strategy, I would just play tighter and don't bluff because bad players don't recognize when they should be beat.
