Does Online Poker Play Hurt Live Play?

I've heard that online play is bad for your real table play.
I guess like minigolf is supposed to be bad for your real golf.

For instance the partpoker.com play money holdem tournaments....
its not uncommon to see someone go all in preflop on the first hand with a 73 offsuit just to get the upper hand throughout the tournament..

After watching poker tournaments on television...if someone has a good draw... They'll usually fold if they didn't land anything on the flop....as when you have a drawing hand on the flop in online games....most players tend to keep throwing money in the pot....

It could just be different player strategies....but what's everyone's take on this?

Answer

Personally, I think playing online has helped my game immensely for many reasons.

First of all, it allows you to play the game all the time where otherwise you would probably only be able to play once a week at the most.

Second, the tells you pick up online are based on the way people play and bet. You are not spending your time looking for facial ticks and other stupid things that people really don't have unless they are completely terrible.

Third, I also agree that people generally do not play premium hands online, but that doesn't mean that you have to play that way. When I'm playing online, I play exactly the same way I do when playing in person.

The play money games as you discussed, are pretty much a waste of time. There has to be some money on the line for people to take it seriously. They still may play bad, but they are doing their best. Finally, a lot of people have started playing holdem so a lot of them are not very good.

Playing against people online that are poor players helps you prepare for the real world. You learn things like it's often best not to bluff because players won't fold, etc. So, as a simple answer I definitely do not think it's bad for your table game.
